Regrettably, we have made the very hard decision to stop breeding Bernedoodles.

We’ve put in 3 years of hard work and a huge amount financially (even more emotionally) into the breed so we have not taken the decision lightly.

It’s a very complex situation but ethically it no longer aligns for us as breeders or as people.

We are making this decision in favour of (and personally feel a better choice for most owners would be) either the tried and tested Goldendoodle or (in our opinion, the champion of all poodle crosses) a Pyredoodle. The Pyredoodle is the healthier and less energetic cousin of the Bernedoodle and a breed we believe offers everything people hoped the Bernedoodles would be and more. We are incredibly grateful and honoured to have found ourselves a niche in not just producing family pets, but more and more therapy and assistance dogs. It’s something we take more seriously than people will ever know and we can’t responsibly fit Bernedoodles into our plan as we don’t believe they have reliable enough temperaments to be bred for the job.

Unfortunately it is becoming more and more evident to us that Bernedoodles are becoming a fad, primarily driven by the admittedly cute tri-coloured markings. As anyone who’s spoken to either of us will know, we are strongly against breeding for colour - as with any fad breed/colour, the health and temperament has to be compromised in order to produce dogs in line with a customer driven aesthetic and it’s something we don’t want to be part of and vehemently disagree with.

Pair this with wildly inaccurate online write ups of them, including sizes being a lot bigger than most people are wanting (and breeders are promising) they have all the makings of a dog breed disaster with many potentially ending up in rescue centres due to owners that are in over their head (or worse, in favour of a new fad)

We both still believe they are lovely dogs and have a lot of potential to make many families incredibly happy, but they are sadly being purchased by the wrong people for the wrong reasons and will absolutely create a bad name for the breed.

To highlight how much of an impact the misinformation around the breed has, we regularly have people get in touch who are struggling to decide between a Bernedoodle and a Cavapoo, having read they are similar. The Poodle is the same in both (in terms of Miniature Bernedoodles at least) but the other half of each cross couldn’t be further apart. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be potentially the most docile, calm and gentle of all the dog breeds. They are 12kg and positively slug-like in their energy levels. A Bernese Mountain Dog is a 40kg - 70kg working dog, bred to guard livestock in the mountains and be on the move all day, with a purpose and job to do. I’m sure just reading that you can imagine the two breeds are at completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

Both of our Bernese girls have been retired and will live here roaming around our smallholding doing what they do best - guarding our livestock. We are fortunate to have the space and activity levels here to keep them entertained and well exercised and we will forever enjoy having them here. Mick in particular has a real soft spot for them but even he admits that they can be extremely tricky and would be disastrous in the wrong hands. We don’t regret getting involved with the breed for a second - we’re just proud we made the decision early and can safely say we have not been part of the inevitable problem that we feel Bernedoodles are going to create through no fault of their own.
